Shanghai's major construction projects have kicked off the year with great vigor, drawing investments of 52.96 billion yuan ($7.32 billion) by the end of March, representing 23 percent of the annual plan and marking a notable 21.2 percent increase from last year.

The city's major urban infrastructure projects in 2024 encompass 67 formal initiatives with an annual planned investment of around 107.6 billion yuan ($14.87 billion), focusing on crucial areas such as energy supply, urban transportation, and safety.

These projects align with national strategies, including the development of the Free Trade Zone, the integrated development demonstration area in the Yangtze River Delta, the Hongqiao International Open Hub, new urban construction, and the transformational development of the Baoshan and Jinshan districts.

This year, the city has 58 ongoing projects, including the future transport hub Shanghai East Railway Station, the Shanghai-Chongqing-Chengdu high-speed railway, and the Longchang Road cross-river tunnel. Additionally, six projects are slated for completion, including the Shanghai section of the Shanghai-Suzhou-Huzhou high-speed railway, the westward extension of Line 17, the Beiheng underground expressway, and the Yindu Road cross-river tunnel.

The Shanghai East Railway Station project has completed the construction of the basic pile foundation and is in the pit excavation phase. Meanwhile, the Airport Link Line, connecting the Hongqiao and Pudong airports, is well underway in its Phase I construction, which is expected to be completed by the year's end. With a total length of 68.6 kilometers, the line aims to reduce the travel time between the two airports to approximately 40 minutes upon completion.
